Maciej Cegłowski is a Polish-American web developer, entrepreneur and speaker based in San Francisco. After leaving Yahoo, he founded the bookmarking service Pinboard.in in 2009, a small, ad-free paid service that emphasises privacy. He writes essays and publishes his conference talks, many of them critical of the tech industry’s approach to data and surveillance, on his website Idle Words, and he started Tech Solidarity, a grassroots group for organising tech workers.
His talk here, Haunted by Data, is filed under big data. As the title suggests, it looks at the downside of collecting and storing large amounts of data about people, a question that matters to any product team deciding what user data to gather and how long to keep it.
