When signing up for a new facebook account, a wizard takes you through the sign up process. The first step in the wizard is to find some of your existing friends through your email address book or your social accounts. If you choose to skip the step, the consequence of skipping is explained as a loss, which hopefully for facebook, we will try to avert.
