Andy Clymer

Andy Clymer is a type designer. He studied graphic design at San Diego State University and type design in the Type & Media programme at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. As a senior designer at Hoefler & Co., he worked on retail and custom typefaces and on the software used to produce them. With Jonathan Hoefler he designed Obsidian (2015), a decorative typeface inspired by engraved map lettering, for which they built software that shades letterforms with virtual lighting.

Andy Clymer’s talk here is Designing Obsidian, from 2015. It is filed under typography, the craft of choosing and shaping type so that text is readable and carries the right tone.
