Typography
Typography is the craft of arranging type: choosing typefaces, sizes, line lengths, spacing and hierarchy so that text is readable and communicates the right tone. On the web it also involves technical questions about how fonts are delivered, rendered and adapted to different screens.
For UI and UX design, typography does much of the work. Most interfaces are largely text, so type choices affect readability, scanning, accessibility and the personality of a product. Good typographic hierarchy helps people understand what is important and where to look next.
The six talks here run from 2010 to 2015. Jason Santa Maria speaks “On Web Typography” at Webstock in 2013, Tim Brown on “Universal Typography” at Smashing Conference in 2014, and Jonathan Hoefler on “Putting the Fonts into Webfonts” at beyond tellerrand in 2014. Martina Flor covers “Telling good from bad” at beyond tellerrand in 2015, Andy Clymer talks about “Designing Obsidian”, and Marian Bantjes presents “Intricate beauty by design” at TED Talks in 2010. Related topics include design and sketching.
