Content Design
Content design is the practice of deciding what content a user needs, and in what form, to meet that need, whether that is a sentence, a table, a form or a video. It starts from user needs and evidence rather than from what an organisation wants to say, and treats words as part of the design rather than something added at the end.
For UX and product teams, content design matters because much of an interface is content. Clear, well-structured words help people complete tasks, while thoughtless content can confuse or even hurt them.
The two talks here are both from 2015. Sarah Richards’s Content Strategy isn’t just for Content People (Generate London) argues that content strategy concerns the whole team. Sara Wachter-Boettcher’s Everybody Hurts: Content for Kindness (Northern User Experience) looks at writing content with kindness for people in difficult situations.
