UX Writing

UX writing covers the words people read in and around a product: interface labels, instructions, error messages, onboarding text, help content and the wider content a service publishes. It is closely tied to content design and content strategy, which decide what content is needed, for whom and in what form.

Words often do more to guide people through an interface than visuals. Clear, plain language reduces mistakes and support requests, while careless wording can confuse or even hurt people at difficult moments. In agile and Lean UX teams, writing is part of the design work from the start rather than something filled in at the end.

The four talks here run from 2014 to 2016. Erika Hall argues “Stop Writing For the Web” at Creative Mornings in 2016, Sarah Richards explains why “Content Strategy isn’t just for Content People” at Generate London in 2015, and Sara Wachter-Boettcher speaks on “Everybody Hurts: Content for Kindness” at Northern User Experience in 2015. Tomer Sharon’s “Perfectly executing the wrong plan” at Google I/O in 2014 is also tagged here. Related topics include content strategy, interaction design and usability.
