Workflow

A workflow is the sequence of steps through which work moves from idea to finished product: who does what, in what order and with which tools and approvals. In design, workflows cover everything from how a brief is written to how designs are reviewed, handed over and shipped.

Workflow matters because even skilled designers struggle in an organisation whose processes slow them down. Long sign-off chains, unclear ownership and rigid structures can stop good work from reaching users, so improving the workflow is often as important as improving the design.

The one talk in this topic is “Digital Adaptation: Time To Untie Your Hands” by Paul Boag, recorded at Smashing Conference in 2014. It is also tagged with business strategy and the design process.
