Creativity
Creativity is the ability to produce ideas that are both new and useful. In design it covers generating ideas, combining existing ones in fresh ways and having the confidence to pursue them, as well as the conditions that help or hinder creative work.
For UX and product designers, creativity is part of the job, but so is turning ideas into something that works. Understanding how creativity happens, and how teams and leaders can support it, helps designers move beyond safe, predictable solutions.
The talks here, recorded between 2008 and 2014, explore creativity from several directions. David Kelley’s How to build your creative confidence (TED, 2012) and Milton Glaser’s How great design makes ideas new (TED, 2010) look at creativity in design. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s Flow, the secret to happiness (TED, 2008) covers the state of deep engagement. From the 99U Conference come Frans Johansson’s The Secret Truth About Executing Great Ideas, Jason Goldberg’s You Can’t Iterate Yourself To A Business Model and Simon Sinek’s Why Leaders Eat Last. Rory Sutherland’s Life Lessons from an ad man and Brad Frost’s Open by default (Webdagene, 2014) complete the set.
