Prototyping

Prototyping is the practice of building quick, rough versions of a product or feature to explore ideas and test them before committing to full development. A prototype can be a paper sketch, a clickable mock-up, a coded demo or a physical model, as long as it is good enough to learn from.

For UI, UX and product design, prototyping turns opinions into evidence. Putting something in front of users early shows whether an idea makes sense, where people get stuck and what is worth building. It is central to Lean UX, Lean Startup and experiment-driven product management, where teams aim to learn as fast and cheaply as possible.

The four talks here run from 2010 to 2018. Tom Chi presents “Rapid Prototyping & Product Management” at Mind the Product in 2015, and Anders Toxboe covers “Experiment to innovate” at GOTO in 2019. Aaron Walter talks about “Connected UX”, and R.A. Mashelkar speaks on “Breakthrough designs for ultra-low-cost products” at TED Talks in 2010. Related topics include experimentation, usability testing, growth hacking and product management.
