Product Management

Product management is the role and discipline responsible for deciding what a product should do and why. Product managers connect user needs, business goals and technical possibilities, set priorities, and work with design and engineering to ship things that solve real problems.

For UI, UX and product design, product management and design are closely linked. Both depend on understanding users, and both suffer when a team builds features without evidence that they matter. Practices such as Lean UX, rapid prototyping, experimentation and product canvases help product managers and designers test ideas quickly and decide together, instead of handing specifications from one department to another.

The seven talks here run from 2013 to 2018, mostly from Mind the Product. Paul Adams presents “The Future Product Canvas” (2013) and “Don’t Join the Cult” (2018), Ken Norton speaks on “10x not 10% - Product management by orders of magnitude” and Tom Chi on “Rapid Prototyping & Product Management” (both 2015), and Peter Merholz argues that “The Experience is the Product” (2016). Jeff Gothelf shares “Almost Everything I’ve Learned From 5 Years of Lean UX” at UX Poland in 2016, and Anders Toxboe covers “Experiment to innovate” at GOTO in 2019. Related topics include management, agile, cross-functional teams and prototyping.
