Growth Hacking

Growth hacking is a way of approaching product growth through rapid experimentation across the whole product and marketing funnel: how people find a product, sign up, get value from it, return and invite others. It combines data, design and engineering, and favours many small tests over big campaigns.

For designers, growth work is a reminder that the product itself is often the strongest driver of growth. Onboarding, referral mechanics, notifications and habit-forming features all shape whether people stay. The same techniques can easily become pushy, so growth teams need to balance short-term numbers against user trust.

The seven talks here run from 2014 to 2018. Gustaf Alströmer talks about growth and referral at Airbnb (The Family, 2015) and how to get users and grow (Startup School, 2018). Nir Eyal explains how to build habit-forming products, and Anders Toxboe argues to experiment to innovate (GOTO, 2019). Des Traynor covers product strategy in a growing company (Mind the Product, 2014), while Jason Fried on managing for productivity and happiness and Julie Zhuo on building with creative confidence were both recorded at The Next Web Conference in 2016. A sub-topic covers acquisition.
