The Hierarchy of Engagement
Conference talk at Mind the Product
2018 · 25 min
In this talk from Mind the Product San Francisco 2018, investor Sarah Tavel presents the hierarchy of engagement, her framework for thinking about how consumer products build lasting engagement.
The framework looks at engagement as a sequence of levels: first getting users to take the core action that gives a product its value, then turning that into retention, and finally reaching a point where the product becomes more valuable the more it is used. It gives product teams a way to judge where a product stands and what to work on next.
The talk is useful for product managers, designers and founders who want a structured way to think about engagement, retention and growth beyond raw usage numbers.
