Design Decisions

Every interface is the sum of many small design decisions: what to show, what to leave out, which option to make the default and how to word a choice. Some of these decisions are made deliberately, backed by research or experience. Others are made by habit, by guesswork or by whoever spoke last in the meeting.

Looking closely at how decisions get made matters because the outcome reaches real people. A team that understands its own decision-making can explain its choices, critique them honestly and change course when the evidence says it should.

The talks in this topic come from Webstock and beyond tellerrand between 2011 and 2013. Jared Spool examines “The Anatomy of a Design Decision” (2012), Mike Monteiro gives “How Designers Destroyed the World” (2013), and Steph Troeth presents “Cheat your way with UX” (2011). Related topics include critique, the design process, Lean Startup and Lean UX.
