Putting the Fonts into Webfonts
Conference talk at beyond tellerrand
How can type foundries offer web designers an expressive medium, and readers a rich one? And what does it mean for typography to be visually, mechanically and culturally appropriate to the web? In this talk at beyond tellerrand in 2014, Jonathan Hoefler, typeface designer and founder of The Hoefler Type Foundry, explores this side of webfonts.
Hoefler discusses where the needs of designers meet the needs of readers, and shows why webfonts promise much more than just “fonts on the web”. He presents the work behind building fonts: they are not just decorative, but are built around the context in which they will be used, and there are many problems to solve to make a good font.
