Responsive Web Design

Responsive web design is an approach in which a single website adapts its layout to the screen it is viewed on, using flexible grids, flexible images and CSS media queries. Instead of building separate mobile and desktop sites, teams build one site that rearranges itself for phones, tablets and large screens.

For UI and UX design, responsive design changes how work is done. Designers can no longer think in fixed pages; they need to think in components, content priorities and breakpoints. Content strategy becomes central, since the same content has to work in very different layouts, and performance and conversion can suffer if large screens are simply squeezed down.

The five talks here date from around 2013 to 2014. Ethan Marcotte speaks on “Laziness in the Time of Responsive Design”, Jen Simmons on “Getting Out of Our Ruts”, and Brad Frost presents “Atomic Design”. Luke Wroblewski gives “One Design to Rule Them All” at conversions@google in 2013, and Jeffrey Zeldman argues for “Content First” at An Event Apart in 2013. Related topics include CSS, mobile, content strategy and conversion optimization.
