Mobile
Mobile design covers the products people use on phones, tablets and other portable devices, from native apps to websites viewed in a mobile browser. It deals with small screens, touch input, varying connections and contexts of use that change from minute to minute.
For UI, UX and product design, mobile is often the main way people meet a product, which puts pressure on every decision. Content has to be prioritised, interactions have to work with a thumb, and layouts have to adapt across many screen sizes. Testing across devices is harder than it looks, and data about how people use mobile devices can be misleading without context.
The ten talks here run from about 2012 to 2016. Luke Wroblewski gives three: “Mobile First” at An Event Apart, “One Design to Rule Them All” at conversions@google and “Mobile To The Future”. Karen McGrane covers “Adapting Ourselves to Adaptive Content” at An Event Apart, Brad Frost presents “Atomic Design”, and Jakob Nielsen talks about “Mobile Usability Futures”. Craig Sullivan addresses “The Myths, Lies and Illusions of Cross Device Testing”, Kelly Goto speaks on “Beyond Usable: Mapping Emotion to Experience” at UX Lisbon, Genevieve Bell on “The Secret Life of Big Data”, and Andrea Krajewski on “Bye, Bye Screen” at beyond tellerrand. Sub-topics include mobile first, mobile usability and mobile user experience.
