Interface Design
Interface design is the design of the parts of a product people see and interact with: screens, layouts, controls, typography, colour and the way they are combined. A good user interface makes the available actions clear, presents information in a sensible order and stays consistent from one screen to the next.
The interface is where a product’s decisions become visible to users. Choices about what to show and what to hide decide whether a product feels simple or overwhelming, and they can also be used to mislead, as with dark patterns. Designing for many screen sizes adds further challenges.
The 12 talks here span 2007 to 2018. David Pogue argues that simplicity sells (TED, 2007) and Harry Brignull covers dark patterns, interfaces designed to trick people. Luke Wroblewski talks about “One Design to Rule Them All” (conversions@google, 2013) and infinite inputs (dConstruct, 2013). Ryan Singer gives a tour of the design process at 37signals (Future of Web Design, 2010), and Trine Falbe covers designing web interfaces for kids. Other talks come from Rochelle King, Erika Hall, Aaron Walter, Jason Fried, Paul Adams and Benjamin De Cock.
