Life Lessons from an ad man
Conference talk at TED Talks
· 16 min
In this 2012 TED talk, Rory Sutherland, Vice-Chairman of Ogilvy Group UK, makes the case that intangible value can be a creative, and sometimes better, alternative to quantitative value.
At the heart of the talk is a question he puts to the audience: “How many problems in life can be solved by tinkering with perception instead of trying to change reality?” For designers, it is a prompt to consider that changing how a product, service or experience is perceived can be as effective as changing the thing itself.
The idea connects to persuasive design patterns such as framing and value attribution, which describe how presentation shapes the value people assign to what they get.
