The Player's Journey
Conference talk at Gamification 2013
· 34 min
In this talk from Gamification 2013, Amy Jo Kim, PhD, a game designer and web community architect whose credits include Rock Band, The Sims and Ultima Online, looks at how video games are changing. The zero-sum, competitive games most people are used to are giving way to something more co-operative.
Kim explains why she sees the future of games as co-operative: it is proving to offer a more engaging and rewarding experience for participants. In her words, gaming is shifting from the “me” to the “we”.
Many of her examples are proper video games, but her 7 Rules of Cooperative Game Design could be applied to the design of almost any social space. A useful question to take away is how you might apply these seven rules to your own project.
