Designing with Data
Designing with data means using quantitative information, such as analytics, A/B test results and usage metrics, alongside qualitative research to inform design decisions. Data can show what people actually do, where they get stuck and whether a change made a difference.
The relationship between data and design isn’t always easy. Numbers can sharpen judgement and settle arguments, but they can also be misread, chase the wrong goals or push out the understanding of why people behave as they do. Knowing what to measure, and how to interpret it, is now a core skill for UX and product teams.
The three talks here were recorded in 2014 and 2015. Jim Sterne talks about augmenting UX with data at UX Poland (2015). Jared Spool asks “Is Design Metrically Opposed?” at the Design and Content Conference (2015), and Rochelle King looks at the complex relationship between data and design in UX (TED Talks, 2014).
