How giant websites design for you (and a billion others, too)

Conference talk at TED Talks
· 13 min

In this 2014 TED talk, Margaret Gould Stewart, Facebook’s Director of Product Design, who has managed user experiences for six of the ten most visited websites in the world, looks at what it means to design for a billion people.

Facebook’s “like” and “share” buttons are seen 22 billion times a day, making them some of the most-viewed design elements ever created. Stewart outlines three rules for design at that massive scale: one so big that the tiniest tweak can cause global outrage, but also so large that the subtlest improvement can positively affect the lives of many.

The talk is a useful look at design principles and data-informed design for products with very large audiences.
