The End of Navel Gazing

Conference talk at UX London
· 35 min

In this UX London 2018 talk, Paul Adams, who runs product design at Intercom, makes a clear case about what a multi-disciplinary team should and should not be. It does not mean a group of people from different departments dictating what the UX and UI design should look like according to their personal preferences.

Adams sets out three conditions. First, the disciplines involved need to be relevant to the project. Second, each person should practise their own discipline as they know best. Third, there should be ongoing communication to inform, review and negotiate, iteratively and quickly, what each discipline delivers to or needs from the others, without one discipline doing or interfering with another’s work.

What you'll learn

  • A multi-disciplinary team is not departments dictating design preferences
  • Include only the disciplines relevant to the project
  • Each person should practise their own discipline as they know best
  • Ongoing, iterative communication between disciplines without interference
