The Web's future is offline
Conference talk at beyond tellerrand
For most people, the web is synonymous with the internet: no connection, no web. In this talk from beyond tellerrand 2014, John Allsopp, author of Microformats: Empowering Your Markup for Web 2.0, argues that this association holds back how, and what, we build for the web.
Just as native apps can run on a device with poor or no connectivity once installed, so can web sites and apps, though few people know it. Allsopp looks at the technologies that enable the offline web, including AppCache, Web Storage and Service Workers, and more importantly at the philosophy behind, and opportunity presented by, the “offline first” web.
The talk is aimed at both developers and designers of web experiences who want a new understanding of what can be built with web technologies.
