Adapting Ourselves to Adaptive Content

Conference talk at An Event Apart
· 61 min

For years, designers have been told that the web is not print: you can’t have pixel-perfect layouts or control how a site looks in every browser, on every platform and every device. They learned to cede control, think in systems and embrace web standards. In this talk from An Event Apart 2013, Karen McGrane, author of Content Strategy for Mobile, asks why content authors are still allowed to plan for where their content will “live” on a web page.

She questions why teams give in to demands for a WYSIWYG editor that works “just like Microsoft Word”, and why so much time and money goes into creating and recreating content instead of planning for reuse. What worked for the desktop web won’t work for mobile. As design and development processes evolve, the content workflow has to keep up, and Karen shows how to adapt to creating more flexible content.
